ASHBY Field Horsehide Jacket

Description

A faithful reissue of the classic Barbour Ashby model, this short coat leverages the exceptional texture and structural integrity of waxed horsehide to create a versatile, timeless piece perfectly suited for everyday wear.

Given that the inherent stiffness and density of leather differ fundamentally from those of fabric, a strict 1:1 replication of the original garment's measurements would inevitably result in visual discrepancies and a departure from the classic proportions.

To ensure the authentic British aesthetic was fully preserved, the garment underwent multiple rounds of fine-tuning and modification after initial assembly. Subtle adjustments were made to every detail—including the width of the storm flap at the collar, the trim on the upper pockets, the flaps of the lower pockets, the angle of the collar points, and the curvature of the shoulders and sleeves.

The entire process spanned four months and involved the production of three distinct prototypes—a no-expense-spared endeavor driven by an unwavering commitment to absolute precision.

Details

Crafted from a single, continuous hide section spanning the entire front and back panels, this garment entails an exceptionally high consumption of leather material.

Made from uncoated, full-grain oil-waxed horsehide, the material is naturally prone to acquiring minor surface scratches—such as those caused by fingernails—during daily use. These marks can be partially remedied through regular maintenance using leather oil or wax. Consequently, we advise non-enthusiasts—those who prioritize sheer abrasion resistance over the aesthetic appeal of a leather's natural "patina" development—to consider their purchase carefully.

Weighing approximately 5 catties (2.5 catties), the garment feels substantial yet never burdensome when worn. This comfort is attributable to two key factors: first, the precision-engineered, three-dimensional cut ensures a flawless, ergonomic fit—a design complexity that also contributes to the higher cost of the leather; and second, horsehide of equivalent thickness is inherently lighter and more pliable than cowhide.

Faithfully retains the signature characteristics of the classic BARBOUR ASHBY model:

  • Features a distinctive, large-gauge ring-pull double-zipper, custom-commissioned from YKK.
  • Lined with high-gloss, smooth-pile wool fabric (400g) imported from Japan.
  • Contains 8% cashmere for superior warmth and comfort without creating a bulky silhouette.
  • Accurately replicates the unique spliced-lining construction.
The hem is finished with abrasion-resistant twill nylon.
  • Features a corduroy collar (ensuring a warm, non-chilling sensation against the neck).

Every minute detail has been faithfully reproduced—from the corduroy lining inside the pockets to the drainage eyelets located at the base of each pocket.

Barbour Ashby Style Introduction

Barbour Ashby Style Introduction

Established in the 1900s, Barbour boasts a brand history spanning over a century, during which it has produced countless classic styles; among these, the Ashby has emerged as the undisputed standout favorite of the last decade.

The design of the Ashby is derived from the Bedale model, originally introduced in the 1980s. While the Bedale was conceived with a focus on rural equestrian settings, its immense success paved the way for the launch of the Ashby—an urban-refined version tailored to better align with modern aesthetics and contemporary styling needs.

The Ashby features a slimmer cut and a longer hemline, resulting in a more visually streamlined silhouette. It departs from the Bedale's internal ribbed cuffs in favor of standard buttoned cuffs, a modification designed to facilitate easier layering. Additionally, the inner lining of the cuffs is finished in corduroy, adding a subtle stylistic detail when the sleeves are rolled up. Meanwhile, signature elements such as the corduroy collar, triangular wind-guard tab, and four-pocket configuration have been faithfully inherited from the original Bedale design.

Leather use and maintenance knowledge

  • Leather/fur/textile products are consumables. Proper maintenance can extend their service life.

  • When wearing it daily, you should pay attention to protecting the leather surface to prevent scratches by hard or sharp objects, and avoid contact with oil, acidic and alkaline substances

  • Leather products are strictly prohibited from washing, tumbling and drying, and long-term exposure to the sun.

  • If they are wet by rain or moisture, you can use a soft dry cloth to gently wipe off the surface water stains and dry them in a cool and ventilated place. Do not wear before it is completely dry

  • Leather should not be rubbed with water or gasoline, as water will make the leather hard and gasoline will volatilize the oil in the leather and cause it to crack

  • Natural fur/fur collar will have slight curls after long-term wearing or washing. Detergents may cause hair loss at some edges, so dry cleaning is recommended

  • Colorless maintenance oil should be applied before changing seasons and storage to prevent leather aging and cracking. Before application, a small area should be tested on a hidden part to prevent discoloration caused by chemical reactions between maintenance oil and leather

  • Store in a hanging position and do not fold or press heavily to prevent wrinkles on leather/fur

  • Mothballs for mildew and insects should not come into direct contact with leather
