B15B MOD Nylon Flight Jacket

Regular price $158.00
Description

Born from the transition from propeller to jet aviation, the USAF B-15B entered service in 1948 as the U.S. Air Force’s first composite nylon flight jacket. Issued under spec numbers 3220-B and 3220-C, it became a staple for pilots navigating the dawn of the jet age.

To accommodate new jet helmets, many original B-15Bs were field-modified: fur collars were removed, necklines were restitched, and a crude white cloth label marked them "MODIFIED". These MOD variants are now among the rarest military flight jackets, with very few surviving examples.

We’ve spent thousands of hours researching original documents and vintage pieces to recreate this iconic jacket, down to the smallest details. No shortcuts, no generic replicas—just true-to-era authenticity.

Details

Period-Correct Details

Every detail of our B-15B MODIFIED is engineered to match the original U.S. Air Force specifications:

✅ Oxygen Mask Tab: Faithfully recreated in leather, with both elongated narrow and truncated wide profiles, just like the originals.
✅ MOD Collar Modification: Stitching at the neckline intentionally differs in color and technique from the main body, replicating the hand-altered field look.
✅ Vintage Spec Labels: Full reproduction of the original spec tags, including the crude white cloth overlay marking it as a MODIFIED variant.
✅ Military-Grade Nylon Shell: Made from high-density nylon with the authentic matte sage green finish and durable construction of the era.

Modern Comfort Upgrade

While we honor history, we also solve the practical problems of vintage military wear. Original B-15Bs used wool batting that was heavy, prone to mildew, and slow to dry. We upgraded the insulation for modern life:

  • 350g Double-Sided "Lamb’s Wool" + 60G 3M Functional Insulation
  • Warmer than the original military-issue, yet significantly lighter
  • Superior moisture-wicking to keep you dry in damp conditions
  • Resists clumping and degradation, even after years of use
  • Easy to clean and maintain, unlike vintage wool linings

This means you get the iconic look of a 1950s flight jacket with the comfort and performance you need for everyday wear.

Premium Craftsmanship, No Compromises

We don’t cut corners. Every jacket is built to exceed the quality of even the best Japanese reproductions:

  • Heavy-Duty Vintage Zippers: Authentic aged brass zippers that glide smoothly and stand the test of time.
  • Reinforced Seams: Double-stitched at stress points for durability, just like the originals.
  • Ribbed Cuffs & Hem: Thick, stretchy ribbing that locks in warmth and maintains its shape.
  • Tailored Fit: True to the original military silhouette, with subtle adjustments to fit modern body types for a clean, non-bulky look.

The Legacy of the B-15B

The Legacy of the B-15B

The B-15B first emerged between 1945-1947, entering official USAF service from 1948-1950 as the Air Force’s first flight jacket to use composite nylon materials. It was produced in two specifications: 3220-B and 3220-C, both retaining the classic B-15A silhouette but refining critical functional details for modern jet pilots.

Key improvements included:

  • Redesigned oxygen mask clips, switching from the B-15A’s dual-triangle design to a single rectangular shape (available in both short-wide and long-narrow variants).
  • Enhanced construction for low-altitude and cold-weather operations, balancing durability with mobility for post-WWII pilots.

As a transitional model between the B-15A and later MA-1 jackets, the B-15B was produced in limited quantities, making original "year one" pieces extremely rare and highly sought-after today. At REAL SIMONS, we’ve spent years researching and reverse-engineering the B-15B to capture every nuance of its authentic era-specific character—no generic "lookalike" shortcuts, just pure vintage heritage.

Reproduction Notes B15B MOD

Replica Concept: Why We Invest in Authenticity

Creating a "genuine" reproduction of a rare vintage piece like the B-15B requires far more than copying a photo. It demands deep historical research, reverse engineering of original materials, and obsessive attention to detail—investments many mass-market brands skip in favor of fast profits.
At REAL SIMONS, we believe classic pieces like the B-15B are worth the effort:

  • Long-Term Vision: Timeless designs like the B-15B sell for years, so we spread our high upfront development costs across a long product lifecycle, rather than cutting corners.
  • Historical Accuracy: Every detail of our reproduction is rooted in verified military specifications and original reference pieces. We spend thousands of hours researching and sourcing rare B-15B documentation to ensure our jacket aligns with the correct historical framework.
  • Premium Quality: We build our B-15B to exceed even the strictest Japanese export standards, with craftsmanship that matches or surpasses top-tier reproductions from Buzz Rickson’s and The Real McCoy’s. The result is a jacket with the elusive "authentic taste" that sets serious vintage pieces apart from generic replicas.
