B3 Flight Jacket

B-3 FLIGHT JACKET

It was standardized and put into service on May 8, 1934. Its appearance was based on the British Royal Air Force pilot jacket of the 1920s.

The features of "IRVIN JACKET" are: heavy sheepskin and fur, a belt on the neck to tighten the fur collar, an adjustable leather buckle at the waist, a zipper closure on the body, and a square map pocket on the right.

In the 1940s, WW2 was in full swing, and high-altitude bombing missions were frequently carried out. B-3 became the standard uniform of the "HEAVY ZONE" bomber crew. At the end of 1942, the US military used a new long-range strategic bomber B-17 in the European theater of war.

It needed to fly to an altitude of 10,000 meters for bombing. At this time, the temperature in the cabin had dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius. In such a harsh environment, the B-3's ability to resist the cold was beyond doubt.

Reproduction Notes

This project draws from original 1940-41 "42-5111-P" B-3jackets, recreated in two versions: a period-correct singlemap pocket and a dual hand-warmer pocket.

Key details follow wartime specs-42-5111-P-style necklabel, Japanese TALON zipper, and high-density AustralianMerino shearling.

Heavy oil-wax horsehide forms the bodyand reinforcements, with 3 mm saddle leather for collar andwaist tapes.

The combination of three premium leathers and full-gradeshearling results in a complex, high-cost build uncommon inmodern B-3 reproductions.

Important Note About White B-3 Leather

Important Note About White B-3 Leather

This image shows an original vintage white B-3.Notice how the white leather displays color migrationfrom adjacent dark panels due to friction.

White leather naturally absorbs pigments when rubbingagainst other hides. Hanging storage and placing paperbetween layers can reduce transfer, but long-term usewill still lead to some discoloration.

A glossier grain finish was chosen to minimize colormigration as much as possible, though it cannot be fullyeliminated. Please avoid storing the jacket with panels compressedagainst each other.

Leather use and maintenance knowledge

Leather products are consumables.

  • Proper maintenance can extend their service life. When wearing it daily, you should pay attention to protecting the leather surface to prevent scratches by hard or sharp objects, and avoid contact with oil, acidic and alkaline substancesLeather products are strictly prohibited from washing, tumbling and drying, and long-term exposure to the sun.

  • If they are wet by rain or moisture, you can use a soft dry cloth to gently wipe off the surface water stains and dry them in a cool and ventilated place. Do not wear before it is completely dryLeather should not be rubbed with water or gasoline, as water will make the leather hard and gasoline will volatilize the oil in the leather and cause it to crackNatural fur/fur collar will have slight curls after long-term wearing or washing.

  • Detergents may cause hair loss at some edges, so dry cleaning is recommendedColorless maintenance oil should be applied before changing seasons and storage to prevent leather aging and cracking.

  • Before application, a small area should be tested on a hidden part to prevent discoloration caused by chemical reactions between maintenance oil and leatherStore in a hanging position and do not fold or press heavily to prevent wrinkles on leather/furMothballs for mildew and insects should not come into direct contact with leather
